Rush was one of the first and most successful progressive rock bands of all time. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1974, when the trio consisted of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey. However, Rutsey retired shortly after the album’s release because his health problems prevented him from doing an extended tour, and so he was replaced by Neil Peart.

The Canadian rockers follow-up album fly at night, which was the first to feature Peart’s percussive grandeur, was released in 1975 and was a bigger hit than its predecessor. However, their third effort, Caress of steel, was a disappointment, and the band’s label Mercury considered dropping them. They built more on the progressive sound they had begun to develop and unveiled 2112 in 1976, which served as a breakthrough.

animated pictures, which was released in 1981 and includes such hits as “Tom Sawyer”, “YYZ” and “Limelight”, earned Rush his first No. 1 album and remains his all-time bestseller today.

Over the course of their career, Rush have become one of the most influential and identifiable bands in rock ‘n’ roll history. They released their 19th record Clockwork Angels in 2012, which was their last. Peart passed away in January 2020, which spelled the death knell for Rush, although they had no ongoing projects at the time anyway.

Rush left a huge legacy behind, so head below to vote for your favorite album, then tune in Wired Nights next Monday at 7 p.m. ET to find out which record prevailed. During tonight’s show, you’ll find out which Smashing Pumpkins album was voted best and hear three songs from the winner.
