Mountain Statesman | Winner of City’s Ulvade Shooting Victims Draw Announced
GRAFTON—The Town of Grafton recently held a raffle that helped fund the victims of a heartbreaking school shooting that occurred earlier this spring.
May 24, 2022 seemed like just another day as families prepared for their daily routines of getting kids to school and commuting to work. Little did they know that in a few moments their lives would be changed forever.
On that fateful day, 19 students and two teachers were brutally abducted from their loved ones as the gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, who was eventually killed by police, opened fire at Robb Elementary School during a an event that shook the nation. at its core.
According to reports, it was considered the deadliest shooting ever in the Texas public school system.
To help bring some financial comfort to the families involved, fundraising efforts have begun for those left behind following the incident. And those efforts traveled across the United States to Grafton, West Virginia, where a local resident found a great fundraiser.
“The Town of Grafton received a guitar that was signed by Little Texas and Darryl Worley, at our annual Spirit of Grafton celebration,” said City Manager Kevin Stead. “The donor, who wished to remain anonymous, requested that we raffle off the instrument and that all proceeds be sent to the families affected by the shooting.”
To honor the guitar owner’s philanthropic wishes, the city got to work organizing a raffle. Tickets were sold for $5 each or attendees could purchase 5 tickets for $20 for a chance to win a unique piece of country music history.
Community members and guests had the whole month of July to buy their chances to win the Urban Acoustic Guitar, and the draw was held earlier this month at a meeting of Grafton City Council.
“We would like to congratulate Brian Foley of Annmore, our Little Texas and Darryl Worley signed guitar winner,” Stead said. “Thanks to the raffle, we were able to raise nearly $300 for the victims of the Ulvade, Texas shooting. We want to thank everyone who participated in the raffle!
