Introducing dance-pop artist Nikkita

Over a year in the making today marks the release of Nikkita’s debut single ‘Looking Up’ as Perth pop EDM artist channels Alison Wonderland and Flume.

A mix of honest yet dark lyrics and heavy, rippling synths plus massive future bass beats, Nikkita worked with producer Izaac Wilson (DZ Deathrays, Tia Gostelow, Chillinit) who polished the song adding textures and tones to bring Nikkita’s sonic world to life. .

With several more “dance-bop” anthems in the works, Nikkita gained the confidence to pursue her solo music career with “Looking Up,” the first chapter of a spellbinding journey.

Who is Nikkita… I’m a Perth-based singer-songwriter and producer trying to bring a raw sense of honesty to the pop/EDM landscape. My music documents my mental health battles, and I really hope it helps everyone who listens to it feel a little less alone.

I seem to… A bit like Vera Blue, Flume or Alison Wonderland. Somewhere between pop and future bass.

My first gig was… Thanks to the pandemic, Nikkita is currently only living in the digital world, but towards the end of 2022 a tour seems possible.

When did you choose your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision… Nikkita is my name. Considering it’s just me at the moment, I’d say that decision was unanimous. This name was chosen a few days before my birth by my mother who was in the bath listening to “Nikita” by Elton John.

In the studio, I’m used to… Work with the absolute legend Izaac Wilson who takes my productions and adds his characteristic textures and tones.

Together we create these kind of moody dance floors that lead to euphoria. We actually haven’t spent much time together physically in the studio since he’s been in Sydney and I’ve been in Perth, so it’s usually about sending rods back and forth and putting them together via Zoom.

If I could shoot with someone… Taylor Swift without a doubt. She seems super nice and I think we would be great friends. It was also after endlessly studying his songs that I realized I had such a passion for songwriting.

Social media is… Such a platform for so many things, including musicians, but it can also be so damaging to people. I would like to see the platforms take more responsibility and more action on this.

My favorite app right now is… Uber Eats because I love food. Especially when I don’t have to prepare it or travel far to get it.

My most embarrassing moment to date was the moment… I don’t think I’m super bothered by stuff.

I’m the kind of person who tells people when I love them and when I write songs about them – even when I know the feelings aren’t reciprocated. Life is too short to be held back by potential embarrassments.

Life on the road can be… I am not sure. Most of my music, I don’t even have to leave my room.

If you’d like to have me on your bill, all I’m asking is that the rider contain… Snacks! Vegans, but honestly I’d probably bring my own haha.

The scariest scenario I found myself in was… Once I was alone in an Uber Pool in the middle of the night and we picked up these two guys.

At some point they started arguing with the driver and pulled out a knife. The Uber driver then casually said he had a gun under the seat and was not afraid to use it. I don’t know if he really did, but the guys came out pretty quickly after that. Uber Pools have always been wild. I miss them.

Which celebrity/famous person would you like to be a spokesperson for the group… Jane Fonda or Dolly Parton. I am committed that all the money I earn from my music will go directly to initiatives or organizations that make the world a better place; and these two women have dedicated their lives to doing just that.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I would really like to go and live in New York. I hear people on the street strike up a conversation with you and that really sounds like my kind of vibe.

Three people you would like to invite to dinner… Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus because they are my three favorite songwriters.

If we came to your house, what would you cook for us? Look, I probably wouldn’t cook because I suck at it. But if it was important that I did, then maybe I’d order burgers for secret delivery and then tell you it’s STEAM HAM – an old family recipe.

When it comes to pets, do you love or hate our furry friends? LOVE pets! I don’t care because I’m on the move all the time, but I’m definitely the type of person to pet strangers’ dogs on the street.

The last time I saw the inside of a gymnasium was… Some time before the pandemic. All this heavy breathing is making me nervous now.

What chore do you hate the most? GARDENING! I’m really afraid of spiders.

Do you have any phobias… Spiders, hippos and robots. Spiders are a no-brainer. Hippos because they can run faster than humans and have these massive mouths.

And my fear of robots came about a day after I watched “Terminator Salvation” in the cinema with this giant terminator machine at the gas station, and then after that Skrillex came on the radio for the first time and I couldn’t watch it. listen because it sounded like robots and gave me anxiety.

Would you ever be on a reality TV show? Yes. One of those obstacle course shows like “Wipeout” or “Happy Smile Super Challenge Family Wish Show”.

If you could prank one of your friends, who is your target and how do you take them down? This is going to sound really lame, but I’ve never done a joke before and wouldn’t even know how to. Please don’t judge me.

The best local takeout restaurant for a midnight meal that will leave you in a food coma? Lord of the fries.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? My friends dissected that a lot for me actually.

So it’s a combination of Phoebe Buffay (a bit quirky and always writing weird songs), Chris Traeger (either overwhelmingly positive or hopelessly depressed) and Robin Scherbatsky (hyper independent) – I once had surgery major, I didn’t tell anyone and took a taxi home from the hospital. Everyone was so mad at me!

The last show you binged (and what kept you glued to the screen)? I had COVID a few weeks ago, so I binge-watched “Friends” while living this fever dream.
