It may seem strange to associate “storytelling” with instrumental music. Corn ANIMALS AS LEADERS abandoned the rules, limits and boundaries of conventional rock music early on. Armed with palette-expanding eight-string guitars, rich synths, and punchy percussive grooves, the trio is loved by metalheads, budding virtuosos, jazz fanatics, and casual listeners alike. Like Fork observed, “ANIMALS AS LEADERS walked the tightrope between sheer technical virtuosity and real emotional resonance.” Even without vocals, it’s intimate, mythical music.
ANIMALS AS LEADERS started as a solo outlet for Abasi, including the creative partnership with a classically trained guitarist Javier Reyes and Berklee-trained drummer Matt Garstka is built on a shared love of everything from fusion to technical death metal. Garstka made the cover of modern drummer in 2015. In one of his many cover appearances, guitar world appointed To fish among the guitarists of the decade. rolling stone featured it as part of their “Young Guns” series. the Chicago Grandstand declared it “the closest thing to prog-metal compared to a Eddie Van Halen.” Kerrang! included their album “Weightless” among his best albums of 2011. “The pleasure of movement” entered the Billboard 200 at No. 24 in 2014, and “The Madness of Many” cracked the Top 20 in 2016. Now over a decade into their career, a quick look at the bands they’ve toured with shows the still diverse appeal of ANIMALS AS LEADERS. This is a list that includes CORN, DEFTONES, THRICE, MESHUGGAH, UNDER OATH, TESSERACT and CIRCA SURVIVE, as well as major festivals like LINKIN PARK, AVENGED SEVENFOLD and NOOSE.
ANIMALS AS LEADERS offering more than clinic-ready musicality and skills. The focus on mood, texture and emotional power elevates the material beyond preconceptions, resulting in a fascinating and unique phenomenon, with unlikely and deep appeal across multiple subgenres and over 200 million careers to date.
