Alisha Todd explains how to get the most out of her music degree
Alisha Todd’s indie folk pop sound has been beautifully crafted through years of travel, soul-searching, studying music at Southern Cross University, and yes to every opportunity that comes her way. You’ve probably heard his stuff on Triple J with Scott French, the other half behind indie pop duo GENIIE BOY.
We sat down and talked to Alisha about chasing her dreams… The cart sitting someone? Don’t worry, we’ve left that part out. Here are the good things …
How did it all start for you?
I have always had a passion for singing, then my mother bought me a guitar when I was a teenager. Growing up in Gympie, the public school was really about music. There was a country music program and the teachers were helping with all kinds of things like putting us in bands and taking us to the Gympie Muster.
Imagine the sky is the limit. What is your dream goal in the world of music?
Well I watched this Coldplay documentary recently. The elevation I got when I saw them perform on their stadium tours and the integrity within the band was truly inspiring. This is what I would love to create, a team and a family around me who take a journey together to amazing places and shows and build an empire.
Bless! If you had one piece of advice for musicians currently studying at Southern Cross University, what would it be?
Try some soul-searching first and figure out what kind of artist you want to be. This way you will know what questions to ask and get the answers that will help you get to where you want to be. Examine your future goals as a musician and make the right connections accordingly.
There are so many platforms you can stream your music to these days. Which one means the most to you?
I think when we pull out a music video and upload it to YouTube, it’s the most rewarding because we’ve completely put the whole package together. Every time we get a comment on a YouTube video it looks like a huge achievement because it’s usually from people we don’t know, and it’s like it works, it comes out.
So what’s next for Alisha Todd and GENIIE BOY?
Well, GENIIE BOY has a 6 track EP coming out at the end of August, which is exciting! The last single is called ‘Bad Company’, and it must be my favorite, it’s very dancey.
